djibril keita
Djibril Keita is an American-born filmmaker based in New York City. Having spent formative years between Mali, West Africa, and the US, he holds a fascination for stories about outsiders and those living on the fringes of society.
Keita moved to the US in 2007 for college, initially pursuing pre-medical studies. His path shifted towards filmmaking after becoming involved with a vibrant community of artists in Brooklyn, which nurtured his interest in storytelling and inspired him to write and direct films.
In 2021, he directed his first short film, The Storm, which served as his application piece for the Graduate Film program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Since then, Keita has written and directed three additional short films.
He is currently developing his debut feature film, titled Somewhere Less Than Here. The film centers on June, a young Russian immigrant and aspiring accountant in New York City. Facing the imminent threat of deportation and financial ruin after her academic path falters, June finds an unconventional lifeline—professional cuddling—which offers not only income but the potential for a 'paper marriage' to secure her status. Keita continues to develop projects that delve into the complexities of identity, belonging, and survival in contemporary society.
